My first mixer was a raw Radio Shack unit. My turntables had scratch pads from PDX but city hype stopped there. My decks were straight out of coastal thrift stores. I built them from parts I mined from different turntables. I’ve collected LPs since the eighties. Rock and roll changed my life. I'd go to 'The Greek' in Berkeley, CA for shows. I've seen thousands of live shows throughout my life. My first turntablist experience was in the Oakland Coliseum parking lot at 'Grateful Dead-Chinese New Years' show in the 80's. Scratchin'&mixin'. Finessin' the tables blew my mind. Hip-hop DJs are kings. I stay away from mainstream. Focus on the roots. The story telling, revolution, sex, dance, creative art expression. Lps covers are a limitless canvas. Their contribution to pop culture massive. The vinyl analog sound is the best quality. My record collecting is a passion. I love it!

Moose in the yard

There she is again. Solo now. I wonder were her momma's gone? Getting some sunshine and right near the canyon road. It's like a zoo with all the cars stopped. Folks are lined up for 50yds. It's now dawning on me that I should have taken a picture of the people and not just the moose. She's laying there quietly. Occasionally moving an ear or batting an eyelash. You can see her in action on the video.
I love the comments from the onlookers. Is she sick? Is she stuck? Is she pregnant? All stupid questions, I think. It's easy to see we view animals like we're in a zoo facility. Were is the zoo keeper for feeding time? Watch me pull a rabbit out of my hat! We love technology while nature offends us. We're taught this from childhood. Good consumers aren't going to be spending if their 'wasting' their damn time looking outside. 'We need purchasers' to drive this religion of purchase power. This is democracy and it's the best thing for the whole globe. Unfortunately, technology doesn't function in a world governed by the natural law. Ya ya ya, the human experience determines the value of technology. I get that rhetoric. It's a worship of technology which makes us ignorant to nature. A reliance on technology makes us loyal consumers. We have put ourselves in boxes. Cages, rather, to keep us from nature. We've surrounded ourselves with comforts. We've left the natural world behind but it's continuing on as it always has before humans were here and will after we are all gone.
The moose is a great witness to the perseverance necessary in this wild earth. I live up here in the Wasatch. She survives with fur, with long legs, with years of evolution under her 'belt'. It's amazing how capable these animals are. It's a long cold extreme winter in the mountains. We'd rather not be bothered by nature. It's in the way. It's cold. It's hot. We'll freak when our technology fails which it will. We'll freak when the power isn't turning on in our houses or the water doesn't come out of the tap like we expect. The moose like all natural beings(humans included) live by the natural law. Technology cannot solve that 'little problem'.

Skiing with my younger brother, Nate

This is about Nate. Nate is my younger brother. All Nate's ski equipment if from thrift stores or bargain racks. His skis are from the DI(Deseret Industries thrift store in SLC). I bought them in September. Stiff, short, fat: red grafics, Coyote. 5 bucks, I changed the tag.
Nate used to ski as much as I do. I ski almost everyday. I live in the Wasatch, UT. I ski in and out my front door. It's like old Europe or Farrelones, Chile were I lived 2001. I am an experienced backcountry skier. If I need to go up or down the canyon then I hitch-hike. Some mornings, I skin to Little Cottonwood, head N. to Park Silly(poach some DV or PC mountain high speed lifts) but generally I hit my BC, north facing slopes for consistent deep powder. One of the best set ups I've had in years. I've had some beauties in my day. Chile, Jackson, Mammoth, Lamoille, NV.
Back to Nate. Nate lives in Elko, NV. We were born there and our parents live there still . A breezy 4 hour jaunt from the Wasatch. That's good!
He skied the Coyotes I'd gotten him for the first time last week. I had the Diamirs I'd gotten him in Mammoth, CA mounted. The first generation with the straps. We skinned north up the canyon behind my house. Nate was his usual self, dude could ski on old 2X4 wood boards and kill it.
He was stoked to try his new technology out. I laughed, of course. New to one man is trash to another. Nate and I were raised on skis. He's always been a dynamite skier. This day out was no different. I videoed Nate all day. "These new, short, fat skis are just less work," he remarked. He is better than the rippers at Alta, 'the bird', or 'the village'. He's so powerful, poised and brilliant on skis. It's an art to him. He's a true renaissance man on the hill.
